Autogenous 1200-inch Mill Trunnion Repair

Supplied information continued: Over time the ground product eroded a section of trunnion from the back side resulting in stress fatigue cracks.

The Problem

Crack #1 - approx. 6 inches in length by ½ inches deep, Crack #2 - approx. 24 inches long varying in depth, from cracked through in 2.86’’thickness to 3 1/8’’ in heavier material areas, Cracks #3 & #4 are approx. 4 inches long by ½ inch deep.

The Fix

Holes were drilled around the lock, skipping every other hole. Dowel pins were inserted and peened. Holes were then drilled, tapped & studs installed. This photo also shows drilling completed for stitching. Stitching was completed around locks & crack #2. An additional crack was propagating in shoulder area & studded.

The Results

Project was hand dressed to contour, inspected & highlighted with copper sulfate.
